10 areas for interventions were identified • Village midwife • Labour room & theatre • Intensive care • Blood replacement • Neonatal care • Training • Antenatal Care • Manuals & Protocols • Health Education • Evaluation
There is special emphasis on INTRA NATAL CARE specially at the level of VILLAGE MIDWIVES and THE RURAL HOSPITALS without ignoring the other interventions
DelPHE • £ 20 000 / Year for Three Years
Activities Supported by DelPHE • 1/ Training of jonier and senior staff • 2/ Ddistribution of midwifery kits • 3/ Resporical Visits • 4/ supervisory visits. • 5/ Production of training books and film • 6/ Development of 37 emergency protocol
Challenges and Successes • 1/progressive reduction of MMR & NMR • 2/Gaining a strong political commitment • 3/ Harmonized team working (Edu. & Health) • 4/ Raised community awareness & participation • 5/ Internal & external recognition • 6/ Upgrading of Midwifery Service • 7/ Absorption into SMOH activities • 8/ Inputs, processes, outputs and impact

Sustainability Technical: • Continuation of the in service training course • Extension of the Initiative • Involvement of the RH directorate in all activities • Development of MM & NM Inquiry forms Political: • Patronage by the Governor • posting of obstetric consultants in rural H. • absorption of VMW in paid jobs • Inclusion of upgrading of rural H. in the early budget of the SMOH
Sustainability Social: • Community mobilization and participation • Rural hospitals’ support committee Economical: • Financing the courses by the Minster of Health • Involvement of other NGOs
Lesson learnt • 1/ Effective MM reduction is achieved through focusing on INTRANATAL care • 2/ Improvement existing service is more effective than starting a new line. • 3/ Strong partnerships gives highest outputs with the least cost.
