  6. Challenges • using videconference/collaborating tools for end users is starting to be easier, but NOT YET dial and play. • H.323 is here; but still some twists needed to make it interoperate • SIP sun is rising up, but “midday is a bit delayed” • Collaboration tools old and new: is that the way forward? • Need actions now for supporting service use • Need research now to decide the way forward TNC 2006, Catania

  7. Challenges • convergence between grid and NRENs activity is touching fundamental topics • Security: users’ credentials are (no) more an obstacle to grid deployment (?) • Middleware: certificates are deploying, collaboration with NRENs • digital identity federations on the start; the “last operator” is often the same person inside the campus/institution • ECAM  (do you have a mirror)? • etc... TNC 2006, Catania

  8. Challenges • Network services and tools to non scientific users is starting • Scientific users are curious to know what’s behind it • Other users are afraid of what’s behind it, “don’t worry” support • Strong cultural differences: build the bridge to understand each other (local cultural digital divide) • Pioneers exists taking over the challenge • Initiatives to support new user's communities • medical, arts, humanities,… • “the best choice” for them often is different from the one for scientific users TNC 2006, Catania

  9. Challenges • PR aspect: • you get often much more out of it than out of a 40Gb speed record TNC 2006, Catania

  10. Issues • control plane for complex mixed networks • Routed • Switched • Optical • CBF and Backbone • Central vs Users’ control • Who knows what’s happening when something is going wrong? • … anything we are just discovering now TNC 2006, Catania

  11. Issues • How to "scale up" NRENs services to bigger numbers • Has e-mail a problem? • Do our services management scale up to millions and millions of users? • Are NRENs ready to handle with the well know high quality support thousands and thousands of “customers” ? • NRENs offer more… How to keep it “more” and scale it up. TNC 2006, Catania

  12. Questions? TNC 2006, Catania
