Terms and Names • Containment • U.S. Policy of taking measures to prevent the extension of communist rule to other countries. • NATO • North Atlantic Treaty Organization - a military alliance pledging support to member countries in case of attack. • Mao Zedong • Communist leader who successfully lead a revolution in China. • Korean War • War in Korean Peninsula between Communist North, supported by Soviet Union and China, and the Democratic South, supported by the U.S.

McCarthyism • Unsupported accusation and attack against Americans of being communists by senator Joseph McCarthy • John Foster Dulles • Anti-communist secretary of state under President Eisenhower. • Brinkmanship • Eisenhower's willingness to to go to the edge of an all-out war. • Central Intelligence Agency • The external intelligence agency formed after WW-II to gather information about enemy activities.
