What is Development? The total process by which an organization increases public understanding of its missions and acquires private financial support for its programs. Philanthropy is about people voluntarily donating time and money to make a difference. At UCSF, the University Development and Alumni Relations manages development efforts.
Development Office Resources Planned Giving Corporate and Foundation Relations Annual Giving Major Gift Officers, including:
Key Considerations • Role of Individuals Donors • Tenets of relationship building are same for patients and non-patients • Attention to the donor’sneeds and where they overlap with our shared vision • Importance of dreaming big, then making thosedreams come true: “A big vision brings visionary donors”
The Process of a Major Gift Relationship 1. Identify 2. Qualify
Importance of Identification • Always be ready to share your elevator speech • Make it compelling • Explain it everywhere, championing it to everyone • One to three sentences that explains what you are doing, why it is important and what it would take to achieve. • Inspiring examples that illustrate why your vision is important and how each strategy is or will be achieved • Visioning exercise: What would you do with $5 million and why? • Speak about your work enthusiastically everywhere – you never know who you are talking to!
Opportunities • Patients and Families • Former Trainees • Foundations and Corporations • Individual Prospect Identification is key • Your personal and professional networks • Research donors to “like” organizations • Lectures (ex. Commonwealth Club, Rotaries, etc.) • IndiegogoCrowdfunding
Your Role • Vision/Strategy • set goals for your program • articulate a compelling case for supporting • Portfolio Development • work with a member of the development team to identify prospects for major gifts • And remember, major gifts take time to raise • over the next 6 to 12 months, prospects will be ready to make gifts (of course, some gifts are faster and some are slower)
