Ulysses S. Grant • Led the union Army • Son of a tanner on the western frontier and grew up the hard way • Believed in democracy and that no man was born to anything, but given chance to show how far he could rise in life • Fought for a broader concept of society
Robert E. Lee • Led the Confederacy • Virginia native with background of family, culture, and tradition • Embodied a way of life that came from knighthood and the English squire • Saw himself in relation to his own region in which his static society could endure almost anything except change
Similarities in Generals • Fighting qualities were very much alike. • Both had great virtue of utter tenacity and fidelity. • Each had born fighter’s refusal to give up as long as he could stand. • Both could think and move faster than the enemy. • Finally, Both could turn quickly from war to peace once it was over.
After the war… • Met in the Appomattox Court House in Virginia to settle the surrender of Lee’s army on April 9, 1865 • Helped one divided nation become whole again • Two men, very different yet so much alike, showed how two opposing sides can settle their differences as distinguished gentlemen.
