DECam -A New Wide Field Imager on the Blanco 4m Telescope DECam provides a next generation survey instrument to the US astronomical community. DECam is a 3-sq degree imager for the prime focus of the Blanco 4m telescope at CTIO. Filter changer mechanism DECam system provided to NSF for community use by the DOE, STFC (UK), Ministry of Education and Science (Spain), FINEP (Brazil), and the Collaborating Institutions; Fermilab, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Chicago, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, National Optical Astronomy Observatory, Spain DES Collaboration, United Kingdom DES Collaboration, University of Michigan, DES-Brazil Consortium, University of Pennsylvania, Argonne National Laboratory, Ohio State University, and Santa Cruz-SLAC-Stanford DES Consortium 1 www.darkenergysurvey.org
Focal plane C4 Filters & Shutter C2 -C3 The DECam focal plane consists of a science array of 62 2048x4096 full depletion CCDs supported by 4 2048x2048 guider chips and 8 2048x2048 focus and alignment chips. The DECam wide field corrector is a Winn-style five lens, two asphere design that provides a 2.2 degree field of view image at 0.27"/pixel, contributing less than 0.3” FWHM to the image quality. A real time focus and alignment system maintains high image quality . The cartridge style filter changer holds up to eight filters, though at 620mm diameter these filters are a challenge to produce. The initial complement of filters will be grizY. The data acquisition system produces MEF after a 17 second readout and provides real tile instrument health and quality checks. The data can be reduced to astronomy ready images and preliminary catalogs using the DECam Community Pipeline. Text C1 Community Use DECam will be an observatory instrument available to the astronomical community via the NOAO proposal process. For the individual investigator DECam presents an order of magnitude increase in reach over the MOSAIC II, the current Blanco instrument. www.darkenergysurvey.org
