  19. STAAR Griddable Questions • A type of open-ended question used for science and mathematics assessments • Purpose is to provide students opportunities to derive answers independently without being influenced by answer choices provided with the questions 19

  27. General Information:Test Length • Word count attached to overall test rather that to individual pieces, as in TAKS • Maximum word count increases from grade to grade • Number of pieces included on a test can vary from year to year • Number of questions vary, depending on selection length

  28. General Information • Paired selections begin at grade 4 • Paired selections can mix strands and genres • Assessment will emphasize critical analysis rather than literal understanding • Items will have a higher cognitive complexity to match the ELAR/R TEKS

Revision & Editing • Revision and editing assessed separately • 32% of multiple-choice score from revision (9 items) • 68% of score from editing (19 items) • Revision is focused on effectiveness and strengthening/improving various aspects of a piece of writing • Editing is focused on correctness (conventions) Example of Grade 4 revision stem: David would like to improve his story by adding a strong concluding sentenced after sentence 28. Which of these would be the BEST sentence to add?
