Introduction • Story: A tourist visited a church in Germany and was surprised to see the carved figure of a lamb near the top of the church’s tower. • In this morning’s Gospel reading John the Baptist, described Jesus twice as “the Lamb of God”. (Jn 1:29 &36) • For us in the 21st Century, these are rather strange words. Yet to the average Jew of the first Century it wouldn’t have been!
What Did “The Lamb of God” mean to the first century Jew. • It meant the Passover Lamb. • Passover was the annual celebration, when the Jews remembered how God had delivered them from the bondage of slavery in Egypt. • Around about 1500 BC, God called Moses to lead the Jews out of Egypt. But Pharaoh steadfastly refused to let them leave. • The 10th plague was when God sent the Angel of Death to destroy all the first born in the land of Egypt. • However, the Angel of Death passed over (from which we get the word PASSOVER) those Jewish households where the blood of a lamb - without blemish - had been sprinkled on the door lintels.
The Passover Lamb • Ex 12:5 “Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats”, • 7 "Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. • Exodus 12:13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.
The Passover Lamb • “In every household in Egypt that night, there was either a dead lamb or a dead firstborn.” • Only after the 10th plague that Pharaoh allowed the Jews to leave Egypt. • God commanded the Jews to celebrate this act of salvation from Egypt by holding a festival each year, which they called the "Feast of Passover". • In that festival, each Jewish household was to sacrifice a lamb WITHOUT BLEMISH each year during the Feast of Passover. • This lamb was known as the Passover Lamb
Jesus was called the Lamb of God John was saying three things about Christ: • The lamb without blemish • The lamb offered protection • The lamb was sacrificed for guilt that wasn’t his own
1. The lamb without blemish • Lev 1:10 And if his offering is of the flocks, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt offering, he shall bring a male without blemish. • 1Pet 2:22 “He committed no sin, neither was deceit • found in his mouth. الَّذِي لَمْ يَفْعَلْ خَطِيَّةً، وَلاَ وُجِدَ فِي فَمِهِ مَكْرٌ، • 1John 3:5 “You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin” • وَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ ذَاكَ أُظْهِرَ لِكَيْ يَرْفَعَ خَطَايَانَا، وَلَيْسَ فِيهِ خَطِيَّةٌ.
2. The lamb offered protection • The blood of the lamb protected the Jewish households from the wrath of the Angel of death in Egypt. • So Jesus, the Lamb of God offers us protection from the effects of our sin, which ultimately lead to separation from God – or eternal death. • 1Pet 1:18,19 “knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold”, عَالِمِينَ أَنَّكُمُ افْتُدِيتُمْ لاَ بِأَشْيَاءَ تَفْنَى، بِفِضَّةٍ أَوْ ذَهَبٍ، مِنْ سِيرَتِكُمُ الْبَاطِلَةِ الَّتِي تَقَلَّدْتُمُوهَا مِنَ الآبَاءِ، • 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
3. The lamb was sacrificed for guilt that wasn’t his own • ’(Heb. 9:27-28) “Just as man is destined once to die and after that to face judgement, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him” • وَكَمَا وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ أَنْ يَمُوتُوا مَرَّةً ثُمَّ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ الدَّيْنُونَةُ، • هَكَذَا الْمَسِيحُ أَيْضاً، بَعْدَمَا قُدِّمَ مَرَّةً لِكَيْ يَحْمِلَ خَطَايَا كَثِيرِينَ، سَيَظْهَرُ ثَانِيَةً بِلاَ خَطِيَّةٍ لِلْخَلاَصِ لِلَّذِينَ يَنْتَظِرُونَهُ. • (1Jn 1:7) “The blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanses us from all sin.”
John’s Three Testimonies • 1) Jesus Is Yahweh Come • John the Baptist says in John 1:23, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’” That’s a quote from Isaiah 40:3–5: • قَالَ: «أَنَا صَوْتُ صَارِخٍ فِي الْبَرِّيَّةِ: قَوِّمُوا طَرِيقَ الرَّبِّ كَمَا قَالَ إِشَعْيَاءُ النَّبِيُّ». • Isaiah 40:3–5 “A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. . . And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
John’s Three Testimonies • Jesus is Superior • Second, when they ask John the Baptist why he is baptizing, he answers in John 1:26–27, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”
John’s Three Testimonies 3) Jesus Ranks Before • verses 29–30 "John the Baptist says the main thing about why Jesus, the Lord of glory, has come to earth. “The next day [John] saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, “After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.”’ • The point is that John is emphasizing Jesus’ rank. Jesus is absolutely before John. Jesus is from eternity. “In the beginning was the Word” (John 1:1).
Jesus is the lamb of God • John 1:29 “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Jesus is the Lion in Rev. 5 • Revelation 5:5 "And one of the elders said to me, "Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals." • There is one who is worthy! There is one member of the human race who has not sinned: The Lion of the tribe of Judah!
Jesus is the Lamb in Revelations • Rev 7:9 "After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands" • بَعْدَ هَذَا نَظَرْتُ وَإِذَا جَمْعٌ كَثِيرٌ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَحَدٌ أَنْ يَعُدَّهُ، مِنْ كُلِّ الأُمَمِ وَالْقَبَائِلِ وَالشُّعُوبِ وَالأَلْسِنَةِ، وَاقِفُونَ أَمَامَ الْعَرْشِ وَأَمَامَ الْحَمَلِ، مُتَسَرْبِلِينَ بِثِيَابٍ بِيضٍ وَفِي أَيْدِيهِمْ سَعَفُ النَّخْلِ
Jesus is the Lamb in Revelations • Rev 15:3"And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, "Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations!" • Rev 21:22 "And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb"وَلَمْ أَرَ فِيهَا هَيْكَلاً، لأَنَّ الرَّبَّ اللهَ الْقَادِرَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ هُوَ وَالْحَمَلُ هَيْكَلُهَا.
Conclusion I • Jesus is the Lion and the Lamb. He is the King, coming to wreak vengeance on His enemies; He is the gentle lamb, dying for His people. As Isaiah writes: • Isaiah 40:10-11"Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. هُوَذَا أُجْرَتُهُ مَعَهُ وَعُمْلَتُهُ قُدَّامَهُ • He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. بِذِرَاعِهِ يَجْمَعُ الْحُمْلاَنَ وَفِي حِضْنِهِ يَحْمِلُهَا وَيَقُودُ الْمُرْضِعَاتِ» • He comes to rule, He comes to pay back His enemies • He comes to gently carry His lambs.
Conclusion II • See Him in His entirety! See Him in ALL His glory! Don’t try to tame Him, to limit Him, to box Him in! • Love Him as the Lamb, dying for your sin! • Submit to Him as the Great Shepherd • Love Him as the Lion, with all authority, might, and power! • Love as the bridegroom, coming for His church! • Love Him as the conquering, vengeful King with the bloody robe! • Love Christ the Lamb of God – and rejoice that He is king.
