  1. Define MONSTER. Take two minutes to write your definition. Draw a picture if it helps! Think. Pair. Share.

  2. MONSTERS Take three minutes to write about a time when you had to face a “monster”. What was your monster? Did you win the fight? What did you win? Personal Journal.

  3. “Bully Blight” • You will be reading an article today called the Bully Blight • You will take notes in your journal in a t-chart • You will then get in groups to discuss the article and answer questions • You will then share your responses with the class

  4. Key Points Inferences • La Shanda Trimble is bullied for her appearance. • Our society judges individuals who don’t fit a “normal” profile. Note-Taking: Using a T-Chart Create a T-Chart on a piece of paper. On the left side, bullet at least 5 key points from the article. Include any vocabulary you may not know. On the right side, list what the article doesn’t say. What has been left out? Make an inference!

  5. Bullying Article Review • You will get into your assigned group and take on the responsibility of one of the following roles: Discussion leader Keeps group on task. Navigates through questions. Recorder Records responses on a separate piece of paper. Speaker Shares with the class.

  6. Group Questions – 7 minutes 1.) What facts were surprising to the group about bullying? Why? 2.) What is something new that the group learned as a result of reading this article? 3.) What are some inferences (educated guesses) your group can establish where bullying is concerned?

  7. PERSONIFICATION • Giving human traits (qualities, feelings, actions, or characteristics) to non-living objects (things, colors, qualities, or ideas). • For example: The window winked at me. Record examples of personification that you see in the video!

  8. Hungerstole upon me so slowly that at first I was not aware of what hunger really meant. Hunger had always been more or less at my elbow when I played, but when I was five years old I began to wake up at night to find hungerat my bedside, staring at me. The hungerI had known before this had been no grim, hostile stranger, it had been a normal hunger that had made me beg constantly for a crust of bread, and when I ate a crust or two I was satisfied. But now for the first time in my life, I have to pause and think of what’s happening to me. What is the dominating literary device used in the passage above? Predict: What is “Black Boy” dealing with?
