  6. Resources • What resources we use • Counters, compare bears, objects- shells, pencils, pens- anything you can count • Shapes • Magnetic numbers • Number lines and squares • Numbers and shapes are all around us- signs, packaging…

  7. Resources • Number cards • Number games- e.g. dominoes • Pack of cards • Socks- pairs, patterns • Lego- towers • 3D shapes- tins, tubes, bouncy balls, cereal packets • Sing songs • Scales- heavier and lighter • Positional language- next to, behind…

  8. How do we teach maths? • We make it practical and hands-on • Try to include it in all ‘subject’ areas • 1:1, groups, whole class • Everyday contexts • ‘Put a number in your head’- mental calculations

  9. Addition and Subtraction First, we begin with fun practical activities. You have 2 sweets. I give you 1 more. How many do you have altogether? You have 4 pencils. I take one away. How many pencils do you have left?

  10. Addition and Subtraction Then, we learn how to write it as a number sentence. 2 + 1 = 3 4 - 1 = 3

  11. Addition and subtraction Have a go! 8 + 7 = We always remind the children to count the jumps not the numbers!

  12. Multiplication First, we begin with fun practical activities. I have 5 friends coming to a party and each friend needs 2 slices of pizza for dinner. How many slices do I need?

  13. Division First, we begin with fun practical activities. I have 8 cookies and need to share them with my friend. How many cookies do we get each?
