CONTENT • Are you confident that you understand the scientific content of your essay? If not, it will be immediately transparent to the reader (us).ASK FOR HELP!
CONTENT • Does your essay contain the following sections, or some derivative thereof? • Introduction/Applications • History • Structure • Properties • Processing • Summary • References
CONTENT • Are the major sections of your report introduced in the first section? • Is the content in each of your sections presented in a logical sequence and/or chronologically? • Does your essay flow naturally from one section to another? Is your essay coherent?
GRAPHICS • Do you have at least six graphics (a minimum of five photographs/line drawings; a minimum of one table)? • Are the figures relevant to the text? Do they help the reader to understand the essay? • Are the figures accompanied by descriptivefigure captions? Are they numbered sequentially?
GRAPHICS • Are tabular materials described in the text? Do tables aid the reader in understanding the content, or do they help to summarize content? • Do tables have a table number and table heading?
FORMATTING • Are the major sections numbered sequentially? • If you use sub-sections, are they numbered sequentially in each section? • Are the figures numbered sequentially? • Are the tables numbered sequentially?
FORMATTING • Is the text Times 12-point, single-spaced? • Are the margins set at one inch all around? • Do you use a consistent style for major section headings, minor section headings, figure captions, and table headings? • Is each page “filled” with text, figures, and tabular material?
CITATION PRACTICES • Are references cited sequentially in the text and after the text? • Do the reference numbers in the text correspond to those listed after the text? • Are the sources for your figures cited in the figure captions? • Are the sources for your tabular materials cited in the table headings?
CITATION PRACTICES • Do you have the required minimum of two hard-copy sources? Note that neither the textbook nor an encyclopedia/dictionary may be used to satisfy this requirement. • Does your essay contain the minimum number of six Web-based references? Note that multiple citations from Wikipedia only count as one “independent source.” • Is your essay compiled from at least ten independent sources?
CITATION PRACTICES • Is the text adequately referenced? Is there a clear distinction between your own ideas and those of others?
LENGTH REQUIREMENTS • Is your essay at least 1500 words long? (1500 words corresponds approximately to 100 lines of Times 12-point text). • Is your essay at least five pages in length? Note that the page must be filled with text, figures, etc.
