Technology Overview Educational Technology Assistive Technology
What is Assistive Technology? Assistive Technology relates to the tools required to maintain, improve, or increase functional capabilities to bridge the gap between student’s performance and the demands of the curriculum. AT can be “magical”…providing a sense of empowerment that results from being able to do something that the user had previously believed was impossible.
Assistive Technology at Schools Core Instruction Curriculum Experts AT Resources in the Classrooms Intensive Instruction & Intervention • AT Program Team • Professional Development, AT Device Trials Strategic Instruction & Intervention School-Site AT Teams AT Resources in the School
School-Based Teams and the AT Referral Process • What can the student do independently in each area of the curriculum? • What are the curriculum demands? (What is the student expected to do?) • Where is the GAP? • What supports are required in order to access the curriculum?
AT Referral Process • Consult with the appropriate site based/assigned related services staff regarding possible accommodations to meet the child’s needs, prior to making a referral for formal assessment • Assessment is completed by the site based/site-assigned related services staff at the student’s school of attendance • AT Assessor for access to curriculum – Academic Performance • OT for motor act of writing – Motor Abilities
Assistive Technology Services If the student requires AT support to access curriculum - • AT Services focus on: • Identification of AT Devices to support student access • AT equipment set-up, “trouble-shooting” as needed • Device training for student, parent and school-site support team • Periodic site visits to address additional training, equipment needs • AT is not a “time and frequency” service model • Provides support required for student access to curriculum
ATLL Design • Four regional Assistive Technology Lending Library sites • Short-term loans of AT devices to support student access to core instruction • Professional Development & Training in use of technology • Technology to support multi-tiered instruction • Information for acquisition of tools and technology
