  10. American stock market crashes, October 29th 1929, BLACK TUESDAY.

  11. In the countryside, sharecropper families are forced off their land by heartless landlords eager to survive the depression by shifting to mechanised farming.

  12. Not just the countryside effected, cities were too.

  13. A mass job-seeking exodus from the southern states..........

  14. .......to California. Could this be Lennie and George?

  15. What happened when the jobless got to California?

  16. Mile long queues for a loaf of bread!!!

  17. A broken society, smashed and weak!

  18. Families living by any means......

  19. ........money in any way possible........

  20. .....whilst attempting to grow crops in iron hard ground. Where would he sell his crops?

  21. Discuss this image with your neighbour.

  22. Families living in squalor.....

  23. .....and deprivation.....

  24. .....making a home from nothing more than a canvas sheet.

  25. A 6 year old beggar boy, San Francisco 1937. (think of your brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces!)

Steinbeck uses imagery throughout the novel. • What emotive diexis can you think of to describe the position these people are in? • Put yourself in their position, how would you feel? • REMEMBER!!! Steinbeck uses imagery that evokes sensory experience in any or all sensory modes. It is intended to make the reader feel more interested and more emotionally involved in the work by creating a mental image of the subject.
