Why are skin product ingredients important to your health? Skin product ingredients are extremely important to your health and frankly most people simply do notbelieve it or they are not aware. Most people assume a company or government regulations are protecting their health. Think again. We must read labels and become aware of the ingredients and what the chemicals are doing to our health. Few read the labels and have little understanding of the chemicals applied to the skin through soaps, lotions, creams, shampoos etc. Are you aware that your skin absorbs 60% of the chemicals it comes in contact with and directly goes into the bloodstream. Think about it? Many hormone therapy, birth control, smoking cessations and other medications are applied to the skin as patches and the medication passes through your skin and directly enters the blood stream. Manufacturers claim that there are only small amounts of these chemicals per item and this is true. However, you use several items at one time and you repeat the use of these items many times a day, week etc. The continued use of these items can take a toll on your health. So what are the chemicals you should look for and why? Here are a few…. SLS, also known as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Parabens Petrochemicals Formaldehyde SLS is primarily used in soaps, bubble bath and shampoo. It is meant to be used as a degreasing cleaning product for industrial areas. However, when is absorbed in your skin it brakes down the protective oils and not only causes the skin to beirritated but then accesses the lower sensitive layers of the skin. Once absorbed it mimics the activity of the hormone Oestrogen. Oestrogen may be responsible for a variety of health problems including PMS and menopausal symptoms to a drop in male fertility and increasing femalecancer such as breast cancer, where oestrogen levels are known to be involved. Parabens are chemical preservatives. On cosmetic labels, you will most likely see the following parabens listed: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben. The concern with parabens is their known to disrupt hormone function which is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity with the sun’s UVB rays, aging the skin and causing DNA damage. Parabens have been found in biopsies from breast cancer tumors at concentrations similar to those found in consumer products. Petrochemicals are common in cosmetic products. Petrochemicals are by products of petroleum and are found in fragrances, lip balm, soaps, lotions, liquid soaps etc. Petroleum and products such as mineral oil trick the body into thinking that the skin is moisturized but instead irritate the skin. Petrochemicals are known to cause numerous health issues ranging from skin rashes to cancer and liver, kidney and nervous system toxicity. DPB (DibutyPhthalate) in particular has been linked with birth defects and lifelong reproductive impairments. Formaldehyde releasing preservatives, HMDM Hydanfoin, Urea and Quaternium 15: these toxins can cause allergies, skin reactions, rashes and are probable carcinogens. Cosmetic products containing formaldehyde releasing preservatives can leak formaldehyde into your body via skin absorption, ingestion or by releasing formaldehyde into the air your breath. Studies have linked formaldehyde to leukemia. EWG’s Cancer Prevention Tips – According to a new report from the President’s Cancer Panel, environmental toxins play a significant and underreognized rollin cancer, causing “grievous harm” to untold numbers of people. Our ground breaking research into umbilical cord blood has found that children are born pre-polluted with nearly 300 industrial chemicals, pesticides and contaminants, many of which have been found to cause cancer in lab studies or in people. Four of every 10 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, and two of every 10 will die from it. Beyond talking to our doctor about lifestyle changes that are known to make a difference – stop smoking, reduce drinking, loose weight, exercising and eating right – there are other things you can do to reduce your risk. Avoid carcinogens in cosmetics. When you are shopping do not buy products that list ingredients with “PEG” or “eth” in their name. Read the labels on your products.
