The Hoover Dam • The Hoover Dam, originally known as Boulder Dam, is both the world's largest electric-power generating station and the world's largest concrete structure. • It is currently the world's 35th-largest hydroelectric generating station • Named after Herbert Hoover • Gave many people jobs during the Great Depression • There were 112 deaths associated with the construction of the dam; 96 of them at the construction site

The Hoover Dam –Construction • The construction period was from April 20, 1931 to March 1, 1936, ending over two years ahead of schedule. • The construction cost was $49 million in 1936, which would be $736 million in 2008, due to inflation. • Originally, there were 16 big generators, 8 on each side of the river, but 2 smaller ones replaced one big one on the Arizona side, adding up to 17 generators total. • The construction team totaled approximately 5,000 people at any given time, and a total of about 15,000 people were employed over the course of construction.
