SD-OCT • SD OCT screens for retinopathy of prematurity in babies eyes • Uses narrow beams of light to penetrate deep layers of tissue and produce a 3-D image of posterior section of an infants eye
What is retinopathy of prematurity? • Eye disorder effecting premature infants • Weighing less than 2.75 pounds • Born earlier than 31 weeks • ROP is caused by abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina, causing the retina to be pulled out of position and even become detached • Five stages, ranging from mild abnormal growth to detached cornea
Cause of ROP • Abnormal growth happens because normal retinal development doesn’t complete until a few weeks after birth • Before blood vessels reach edge of retina, growth stops. • The edge of the retina doesn’t receive enough oxygen so it sends out signals to other areas of the retina for nourishment, resulting in abnormal growth of vessels. • New blood vessels are fragile and can break easily causing bleeding and scaring, which pulls on the retina when they shrink, causing a detached retina
Testing for ROP • OCT- Optical Coherence Tomography • Reflects light to create 2D and 3D images of the eye • Used moving reference mirror to measure the time it took for light to be reflected • Lengthy process • Limited image quality • Usually tested about 4-6 weeks after birth • Eyelid speculum is used to keep the eyes open • Lens with a light will be used to look in the babies eyes • Use a scleral depressor to move the eye into different positions
SD-OCT • Developed at Duke University • Measures multiple wavelengths of reflected light • 100 times faster • 40,000 pictures per second for clearer images • TruTack technology- Tracks eye movement during imaging • Detect changes during the scan
Benefits • Hand-held probe allows the baby to stay in the incubator during testing • Allows for cross-sectional images of the retina, allowing for better visualization • Reduces time spent on diagnosis • Faster diagnosis, faster treatment, less damage to an infants vision
