MAKERERE UNIVERSITYCOVAB SEMINAR SERIESDate: 3rd April 2014 Starting time: 2:00pm Venue: COVAB Media Hall, Level 2 Room 201, COVAB main block Topic: Isolation and antimicrobial susceptibility of Brucella spp in bovine milk in Soroti and Gulu: Public health implications Summary: A typical Brucella abortus without biovar designation was isolated in milk of seropositive cattle in Gulu and Soroti. All isolates were monomorphic at 16 VNTR loci and had a close genetic relationship with the former biovar 7 isolate from Kenya suggesting that Brucella do not need passports to cross borders. All isolates were multiple drug resistant to the WHO recommended regimens for human brucellosis. pe Speaker: Dr. Denis Rwabiita Mugizi Topic: Diversity and possible measures for control of zoonotic Salmonella spp. in pigs from Uganda. Summary:Zoonotic Salmonella spp. are highly diverse and cause diarrhea in young animals and humans. These bacteria are becoming resistant to more antimicrobials and therefore, controlling infection in “reservoir” livestock potentially reduces the risk of human infection and the level of antimicrobial resistance.
