Point of View & Tone “Nobody outside of a baby carriage or a judge's chamber believes in an unprejudiced point of view.” --Lillian Hellman
Someone is always between the reader and the story’s action, relating events from his/her own point of view. This angle of vision from which people, events, and details are viewed is critical to consider. I. Point of View – Vantage point from which a writer tells a story (POV determines how much readers know.) II. Types of POV A.First Person – “I” character tells & participates (narrator speaks directly to reader) 1. Innocent Eye – naïve/young narrator 2. Unreliable Narrator – lying, ignorant, biased B.Second Person – “you” perspective, makes readers participants C.Third Person – all-knowing outside observer 1. Limited – viewed through one character 2. Omniscient – viewed through many 3. Objective – unbiased reporter
POV Questions POV Leaves A Lot to Consider! Who is telling the story? How much do they know? To what extent are the thoughts or feelings of characters revealed? What amount of time has lapsed between the event and telling? What is the attitude of the narrator, the attitude that underlies the telling (i.e. feminist, elitist, etc). What is the narrator’s behavior? How does the POV affect our response? How is our response influenced by how much the narrator knows and how objective he or she is? “I was framed! I just wanted to borrow a cup of sugar!” “That rotten wolf tried to eat us!!!!”
III. Narrator’s Tone – speaker’s attitude towards a subject (i.e. formal/informal, serious/humorous…created with denotations-connotations) A.Denotations – dictionary definition of a word B.Connotations – extra meaning of a word (beyond dictionary definition) C.Narrators are usually characters, not the writer 3rd Person Omniscient! Alternative POV!
