AFFIRMATIVE ACTION • GIVING SOMEONE A BENEFIT OR AN ADVANTAGE, SOLELY ON THE BASIS OF SOME IDENTIFIED CRITERIA, THAT THEY WOULD NOT NORMALLY RECEIVE
NEPOTISM: • GIVING SOMEONE A BENEFIT OR AN ADVANTAGE, SOLELY ON THE BASIS OF SOME IDENTIFIED CRITERIA, THAT THEY WOULD NOT NORMALLY RECEIVE
In terms of conservation of resources, I would say that I am: • MORE conscientious about recycling and not wasting resources (e.g., water, electricity, food) than MOST people around me. I’m above average. • as conscientious about recycling and not wasting resources (e.g., water, electricity, food) as are MOST people around me. I am average. • LESS conscientious about recycling and not wasting resources (e.g., water, electricity, food) than MOST people around me. I’m below average.
In terms of mental health, I would rate myself as being: • In the top 5 percent of people around me (i.e., extremely mentally stable) • In the top 10 percent of people around me (i.e., very mentally stable) • In the top 25 percent of people around me (i.e., quite mentally stable) • About average (i.e., half of the people I know are MORE stable and half LESS stable) • Below average (i.e., most people around me are more mentally stable than I am)
Primary problem with nepotism: Most of us think we deserve something because we’re better than others.

When you think of affirmative action for racial/ethnic minorities, do you think of setting quotas for fixed admissions numbers OR do you think of increasing outreach efforts to find qualified students to admit to Penn State? • Setting quotas • Increasing outreach efforts to find applicants • I think of both
TYPES OF Affirmative Action: • preferences • economic and social aid • job training and educational assistance • quotas
COMMON “PROBLEMS” RELATED TO AFFIRMATIVE ACTION: • It gives people unfair advantages • It gives people something they didn’t work for • Less qualified (or unqualified) people move ahead of those who are more qualified • The abilities of all people of color are questioned • It discriminates against whites and men
COMMON “PROBLEMS” RELATED TO NEPOTISM: • It gives people unfair advantages • It gives people something they didn’t work for • Less qualified (or unqualified) people move ahead of those who are more qualified • The abilities of all family and friends are questioned • It discriminates against women and people of color
What does Obama think about affirmative action? Mexican guy • That discrimination still exists • That AA in some form is necessary • That ALL affirmative action should be linked to social class and economic circumstances
REDEFINING DIVERSITY Georgia Court ruling on affirmative action at the University of Georgia “Diversity cannot be defined by race alone” Diversity programs must take into account all talents, life experiences, and other factors that apply to Whites as well as people of color
I have benefitted from affirmative action. • Strongly agree • Agree • Disagree • Strongly disagree
