  2. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 NKJV[23] For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; [24] and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." [25] In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." [26] For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes.

  6. What Is a GreatChurch? What a Great Church IsNot! • It may not be growing innumbers! • It may not be growing inbuildings! • It may not be growing inprograms! • Itwillnotbegrowinginpopularity! • Itwillnotbegrowinginfashion!

  7. Why Have a Great Church? • It is certainlynotforourgloryinanyway whatsoever. • It is for the glory of God and His Son JesusChrist! • Itis fortheprofitofallmemberstogrowingrace! • It is forprofitofothersbysoundingouttheword! • To give God a temple exceeding magnifical like David.

  8. What Is a GreatChurch? • It is a church that is modeled after apostolicdoctrine. • Itisachurchthatdoes notmovefromapostolicfaith. • It is a church that does everything right withpassion. • Let us review what the best N.T. churches didwell. • Let each member consider what he or she isdoing.

ChristCentric 1 Timothy 1:15 NKJV[15] This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 1 Corinthians 2:2 NKJV[2] For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Colossians 1:18 NKJV[18] And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. • A great church is centered around Jesus Christ! • In all things He shouldbepreeminent (Col 1:18; I Cor16:22). • All content is toward Jesus Crucified! (1 Cor 2:2; Gal 6:14). • This is the Great mystery of Godliness (1 Tim 1:15; 3:16) • What are you doing? is your life notably Christcentric?

First Love-Hot Colossians 3:1-2 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. Revelation 3:15-19 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Revelation 2:4-5 4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. • Jesus is severe to churches losing firstlove (Rev2:4-5). • Jesus is severe to lukewarmchurches (Rev3:15-19). • Minding earthly things is bellyworship (Col3:1-2). • Great churches provoke one another to loveChrist. • What areyoudoing?Are you renewing your firstlove?

Spirit-Filled Acts 2:46-47 46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. Galatians 5:16 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Ephesians 1:17 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, Ephesians 5:18 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, • Itisacommand tobefilledwiththeSpirit (Eph5:18). • The greatest church was filled with theSpirit (Ac2:38-47). • You should pray for this greatblessing (Eph 1:17;3:14-19). • We should live and walk in theSpirit (Gal 5:13-26; Ep 5:8-10). • What areyou doing? Doctrinal- Strong Jude 3 New 3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. Romans 16:17-18 17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. Titus 3:10-11 10 Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned. Psalm 119:128 128 Therefore all Your precepts concerning all things I consider to be right;I hate every false way. • Great churches fight for doctrinalintegrity (Jude1:3). • False teachers are marked and avoided (Rom16:17-18). • Heretics arerejected (Gal 1:6-9; II Tim 3:5; Titus3:10-11). • False doctrine is hated, truthexalted (Ps 119:128; I Ti3:15). • What areyoudoing? Do you know and defendtruth?

Preaching Emphasis • The Bible emphasizes preaching over anythingelse. • Allthingsaredoneforedification,notentertainment. • Paul preached to midnight, no praise bandspresent. • Growth in faith is by God’sword (Rom 10:17; I Pet2:2). • What areyou doing? Prepare passionately tohear.

Perilous Times Jeremiah 6:16 Thus says the LORD: "Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it.' 2 Timothy 3:1-2 3 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, • Alert churches see the prophecyfulfilling (II Ti 3:1 –4:4). • They know this is the greatest danger thechurch faces. • They studiously obey its warnings against allfoes. • They hold to the old paths asdirected (Jer 6:16; Jude1:3). • What areyou doing? Observe and despisetrends.

Praying Eph 6:17-18 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints Acts 2:42 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. • The most powerful thing any church can do ispray. • Effectual fervent prayers by the righteous availmuch. • The early church was a prayingchurch (Acts 2:42;12:5). • The armor of God is worn by prayerwarriors (Ep6:10-19). • What areyou doing? Do you pray for churchdaily?

Brotherly Love John 13:34-35 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” • Jesus said to be known by brotherlylove (John13:34-35). • This is love within the church, not socialprograms • This is sacrificial, selfless efforts to perfect thebody. • This is other-oriented keeping of one anotherduties. • What areyoudoing? Are you mainly giving, nottaking.

Forgiving Ephesians 4:31-32 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. • To be a great church, we must forgive oneanother. • We should forgive as we have beenforgiven (Ep4:31-32). • God and Christ forgave far more than you evercan! • We need God’s forgiveness, so we must gladly giveit. • What areyoudoing? Love to forgive fully, freely,now!

  18. What Is a GreatChurch? Peaceful 1 Cor 3:3 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? Proverbs 19:11 11 The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger,And his glory is to overlook a transgression. Matthew 5:9 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Ephesians 4:3 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. • Jesus Christ loves a peacefulchurch (I Thess 5:13; Eph4:3). • Jesus Christ lovespeacemakers (Matt 5:9; James3:17-18). • Churches with division are notgreat (I Cor 3:1-3;1:10-13). • Peace takes sacrificialcompromise (I Cor 6:7-8; Pr19:11). • What areyou doing? Always sooth, neverstrive!

Unity John 17:20-21 20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. Psalm 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! 1 Corinthians 1:10 10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. • A church should have one mind andmouth (I Cor1:10). • ThisunityofworshipistoglorifyGod (Ro 15:6; Ps133:1-3). • All must endeavor to keep our commonunion (Ep4:3). • We pray and labor for unity like Jesus prayed John 17:20-21 • What areyou doing? Avoid any cliques, debates,etc.

Discipline 1 Thes 3:6, 14 6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. 14 And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. • Great churches discipline theirmembership (I Cor5:1-13). • They exclude and shun publicsinners (II Thess3:6,14). • Discipline is sad, but it is also necessary to begreat. • The holiness of God and Jesus Christ’s Table is atstake. • What areyou doing? Fully agree and cooperate init.

Holiness 2 Corinthians 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. • God is holy, and His churches shouldbe • Pleasing Godrequiressanctification (I Thes 4:1-8; II Cor7:1). • Holiness is unpopular, but so what – periloustimes. • We exalt beauty of holiness, not holiness ofbeauty. • What areyou doing? Are you living a truly holylife?

Zeal 1 Corinthians 15:10 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Isaiah 9:6-7 6 For unto us a Child is born,Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. John 2:17 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” Galatians 4:18 18 But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you. • Zeal is good when affected in a goodthing (Gal4:18). • God was zealous to save you byJesus (Isaiah9:6-7). • Jesus’ zeal ate Him up regarding God’shouse (Jn2:17). • Paul worked harder than all otherapostles (I Cor15:10). • What areyoudoing? Do you laboriously serveChrist?

Attendance Hebrews 3:12-13 12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 10:24 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 122:1-2 I was glad when they said to me,“Let us go into the house of the Lord.”2 Our feet have been standingWithin your gates, O Jerusalem! 1 Corinthians 11:18 18 For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. • Church attendance is not Christianliberty (He10:23-25). • Church duties need the wholechurch (I Cor 14:23;11:18). • God is to be worshipped thisway (Ps 122:1-9; Acts 2:41-47). • Attendance is important for ourduties (Heb3:12-13). • What areyou doing? In what quartile do youfall?

Evangelism 3 John 7-8 7 because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth. 1 Thessalonians 1:8 8 For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything. • The church at Thessalonica soundedout (I Thess1:8-10). • We want to be fellow-helpers to thetruth (III John1:8). • Preachersmust do the work of anevangelist (II Tim4:5). • We should prayto save God’select (Rom10:1). • What areyou doing?   25. What Is a GreatChurch? Passionate Psalm 84:10 10 For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness. Psalm 27:4 4 One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord,And to inquire in His temple Psalm 84:1-2 How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of hosts! 2 My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Psalm 26:8 8 Lord, I have loved the habitation of Your house, And the place where Your glory dwells. • One way to distinguish ourselves is by ourpassion. • David and Paul are two great examples servingGod. • Our love of God and Christ should consume ourlives. • Copy David’s love of God’shouse (Ps 26:8; 27:4;84:1-2,10). • What areyou doing? Is your passion known byall?

  26. What Is a GreatChurch? What Are You Doing about It? Is Northside church of Christ a GREAT church? Indeed IT IS! Not because we make it GREAT. It GREATNESS COMES FROM GOD.
