This notebook check will be 80% of your grade. All notes are expected to be CLEARLY labeled, see below, and dated. STAY ON TOP OF THIS! Do not fall behind.

State Your Claim – a thesis statement Introduce your claim (opinion) with a clear and logical statement What you’ve read and highlighted in your packet should all be in line with your claim the reasons, the quotes, the facts, the statistics, the anecdotes, etc. A thesis should be … focused and specific able to be debated there should be opposing viewpoints (i.e. a counter argument) to be discussed and cited

  3. Debatable vs. Non-Debatable Debate = a discussion, back-and-forth dialogue can take place A non-debatable thesis - Pollution is bad for the environment. A debatable thesis - America’s antipollution efforts should focus on factories. - At least 25 percent of the federal budget should be spent on limiting pollution.

  4. Crafting a Thesis Statement Use this worksheet to help you craft a thesis statement. Complete Statement 1 by stating whether or not you are for or against the topic. Complete Statement 2 by stating you main reason why you are for or against the topic. Complete Statement 3 by giving a call to action (what you want to be done) Complete the last section by combining all 3 statements and using one of the sentence starters provided.
