  2. These exercises ask you to combine a series of plain sentences into just ONE MORE INTERESTING sentence • You will change the plain sentences into sentence parts that resemble the model sentence • Plain sentences can easily be changed into sentence parts of better, more varied sentences

  3. MODEL 1: Twisting and punching and kicking, the two boys rolled across the floor. Lois Duncan, A Gift of Magic • The winning team was laughing and yelling and celebrating. • The team cavorted. • The cavorting was inside the locker room. Combine the sentences to create a sentence that has the same order of sentence parts as the model. Then write your own imitation of the model.

  4. MODEL 2: He fell back, exhausted, his ankle pounding. Ralph Ellison, “Flying Home” • She raced fast. • She was determined. • Her lungs were bursting. Combine the sentences to create a sentence that has the same order of sentence parts as the model. Then write your own imitation of the model.

Hal Borland, When the Legends Die • Clark was afraid. • Clark walked down the alley. • Clark hoped something. • Clark hoped that he was alone there. Combine the sentences to create a sentence that has the same order of sentence parts as the model. Then write your own imitation of the model.
