USA – cities CITIES • NEW YORK Location • New York - the largest city and the biggest port in the USA, is situated on several islands connected by bridges. It is on the east coast of the USA. • The number of its inhabitantsvaries and depends on whether the whole metropolitan area (18 mil.) or only the central area (7.4 mil.) is counted. • The population density(10 000 people/km2)is one of the highest in the world. Sometimes the city is called “The Big Apple”.

History • Nobody really knows when the site of New York was first populated. The original inhabitants were Indians.

In 1664 the British captured the city and renamed it New York. • New York was built as a modern plan of streets and avenues. Streets run east-west and avenues north-south. They started to be built because of the lack (nedostatku) of space and the high prices of the land on the island. • Before the terrorist attack, the World Trade Centre was a complex of seven buildings dominated by the 110 storeys high Twin Towers (417 m).
USA – cities CITIES • NEW YORK Skyscrapers • Other interesting and beautiful skyscrapers in New York are the Empire State Building (1931, 381m), which used to be the tallest building in New York,Chrysler Building (1930, 319 m) - the seat of Chrysler automobile company, Citicorp Center (1977, 280 m),Trump Toweretc. Special attractions / landmarks • In New York there are many interesting landmarks, e.g. St. Paul’s Chapel (kaple) - the oldest church in New York.
USA – cities CITIES • NEW YORK Special attractions / landmarks • Madison Square - named in memory of James Madison, Times Square where people traditionally welcome the New Year. • The first sights, which attract visitors when approaching New York from the sea are the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan Skyline. • The Statue of Liberty became a symbol of both freedom and the United States themselves. It also commemorates (připomíná, oslavuje) the French - American friendship.The statue was given to the USA by the people of France on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of American Independence.
