  1. Objective 09/26/11 Identify the layers of the Earth. Intro If you tried to dig to the center of the earth, what do you think you would find? Would earth be solid or hollow? Would it be made of the same material throughout?

  2. Layers of the Earth

  3. Layers of the Earth • Compositional property • Physical property • Materials and chemical compounds that make up a layer • Solid, liquid, gas or combination

  4. Layers of the Earth • Compositional Layers • Crust • Mantle • Core

  5. Layers of the Earth • Crust • Composition: rock • Thin, outermost layer • Solid • 2 Types of Crust • Ocean Crust • Very dense • ~5-10km thick • Continental Crust • Less dense • ~5-100km thick

  6. Layers of the Earth

  7. Layers of the Earth • Mantle • Composition: melted rock (magma) • Contains metals such as aluminum and magnesium • Denser than crust • Solid and “plastic-like”

  8. Layers of the Earth

  9. Layers of the Earth • Core • Composition: Iron • Very dense • Center of Earth

  10. Layers of the Earth

  11. Layers of the Earth • Physical Layers • Lithosphere • Asthenosphere • Mesosphere • Outer Core • Inner Core

  12. Layers of the Earth Lithosphere Asthenosphere Mesosphere Outer Core Inner Core

  13. Layers of the Earth • Lithosphere • Physical property: solid, rigid • “Litho” means rock • Includes: • Crust • Upper part of mantle • Broken into pieces called tectonic plates

  14. Layers of the Earth • Asthenosphere • Physical property: liquid & solid (like soft wax) • Flows VERY slowly • Includes: upper mantle

  15. Layers of the Earth • Mesosphere • Physical property: liquid & solid (like a very thick syrup) • Includes: lower mantle • “Meso” means middle

  16. Layers of the Earth • Outer Core • Physical Property: liquid • Molten iron

  17. Layers of the Earth • Inner Core • Physical property: solid • Iron • From center of Earth to surface = 6,380km (10,633miles) • Temperature = 5,430°C (9,800°F).[

  18. The Layers of the Earth • Summary: The inside of the earth is divided into three layers based on their composition: the crust, the mantle, and the core. Based on physical properties it’s split into five layers: lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, inner core and outer core.

  19. Objective 09/26/11 Identify the layers of the Earth. Outro • Write down: • 3 things you learned today • 2 reasons why it is important • 1 question you still have
