Upgrading Technology Systems Group 3 Kristin BomberBrett Bushman Mike Kren
What we are discussing • Impending changes to technology • Wireless • IPv4 to IPv6 • 32BIT to 64BIT • UWEC Case study • XP or Vista • Server 2003 to Server 2008 • Office 2007
Why Upgrade Why Upgrade Better security New functionality One time costs can be thought of as sunk because eventually you will have to upgrade. It depends on the cost of training VS. the amount of time saved from improved functionality , ease of use, and security. – Jamison Schmidt
Wireless A B G N • Pros of N • Better security • Faster • Max 300Mbit vs. 54 • Dual band • Cons • Costly - $200 • Equipment upgrades (2-3 years) • Newer technology Draft 2.0
IPv6 vs. IPv4 • Run out of net IP addresses May 2010 • Better security – encryption and authentication • Transition mechanisms between 4&6 • Problems with legacy systems • Software/firmware solved with update • Ready by 2012 • 2002 – Windows – NT,2000 • 2003 – Apple, “Panther” 10.3 • 2005 – Linux 2.6
64 bit vs. 32 bit • 32 • Access only 4GB Ram • 2GB per application • 64 • 16 exabytes (16 mil tera) • Extensive OS modifications needed • Useful for graphic technology • Large amounts of data (servers)
UW-Eau Claire • Operating Systems • Vista vs. XP • Windows 7 • Server 2003 vs. Server 2008 • Applications • Office 2007
Vista vs. XP • XP is getting old • UWEC was chosen to pilot Vista • Our Job • Minimum number of machines • Error reporting • Compatibility testing • What we received • Early builds before public release • Speak with actual engineers • An award
Vista vs. XP • Upside of Vista • Perhaps better security • “New” Look • Vista is easier to package apps for than XP • Vista is easier to manage • Faster network (with Server 2008)
Vista vs. XP • Reality of Vista • Slow in some instance, fast in others • Incompatible with current software • Minimum specs where really high • The two big reasons why UWEC skipped Vista… • Hardware and Software incompatibility • No real added functionality over XP
Windows 7 • UWEC is testing Windows 7 • NOT part of the pilot program • Running public beta on many work machines • So far Windows 7 has exceeded expectations • Very solid, even in beta • Better than Vista
Windows 7 • Why better than Vista • Vista build from the ground up • Took a while for software and hardware to catch up • Windows 7 built on top of Vista • Uses the same drivers as Vista • New Vista Service Pack with fresh coat of paint
Windows 7 • Since we are not in the pilot program • Cannot test packing for Windows 7 • Cannot deploy Windows 7 with current system • We do not get new builds • We have started packing software to work with Windows 7 • Current Plan • Role out Windows 7 ASAP it is released • Update deployment system ASAP it is released
Server 2003 vs. Server 2008 • Mission Critical? • Do not upgrade to Server 08 • Get new server with Server 08 • Not Mission Critical? • Upgrade to Server 08 • Positives of Server 08 • Hyper-V • Easier to manage • R2
Office 2007 • Why did UWEC upgrade so quickly? • “Learning Institute” • Get students ready for the workforce • Difficulties • Incompatible with previous versions • High learning curve • Faculty did not want to upgrade
