What is Birth Control? • Noun [burth-kuhn-trohl] an oral contraceptive for women, containing the hormones estrogen and progesterone or progesterone alone, that inhibits ovulation, fertilization, or implantation of a fertilized ovum, causing temporary infertility
11.2 million (24%) women use oral contraceptives between the ages of 15-44 in the U.S • Contraceptives are only 93-97% effective to preventing pregnancy
Pros for birth control • Lightens a women’s menstrual flow • Does not interfere with sexual activity • Clears up acne • Minimizes the chances of getting ovarian and uterine cancer
Misconceptions of birth control • Prevents Pregnancy • Weight gain • Birth control causes birth defects
Birth defects: false • There is no evidence that a baby will have birth defects if the mother was taking the pill before she knew she was pregnant • However, one should stop taking the pill if one does find out that they're pregnant
Truth??? • Abstinence is the only option that 100% prevents young girls and women from pregnancy and STDs. • Parents, sit down and talk to your kids about sex and stress to them that having sex is truly a BIG decision.
