Compassion 35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.“ Matthew 9:35-36

  3. Compassion "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" 42Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. Mark 1:40-42 40A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean."  41Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.

  4. Compassion Compassion Having compassion means...? Compassion -“The sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.”

  5. Compassion Compassion Now that we know the definition, let's discuss what this does NOT say: • Compassion is not mere sympathy. It is not just feeling your pain. •  It is not just empathy,  putting yourself in their position.

  6. Compassion Compassion •  It is not being politically correct at the expense of being Biblically correct. • It is not a spiritual gift, but a quality of Jesus.

  7. Compassion Compassion • What are some signs that compassion is lacking in a person? • Describe the heart of a compassionate person. • If possible, how can being/showing compassion be detrimental?

  8. Compassion Compassion • When compassion is extended, how does it change a person? • How can a person’s compassion grow for others?

  9. Compassion Compassion 22Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 Compassion • Takes time • Cost something • Requires involvement • Pays attention How is your stewardship of these three?
