What Does That Mean? • Physical Therapy • Extensive rehabilitation • Help improve/regain complete Range of Motion • Use of exercise equipment • Stretching of injured area • Prevents further injury • Outpatient • In most cases, outside of a hospital setting • Neck/Back/Knee/Shoulder injuries among others most common to treat

  3. Required for PT School • Need certain amount of hours • Looks good on resume • Need variety of settings

  4. What Can You Learn? • Hands on experience is best teacher • How to apply Hot/Cold packs • Different exercise equipment available • Various modality methods used • Pick the PT’s brain • See what he knows!

  5. Applying Heat/Ice • 10 minute intervals • Heat in beginning of session • Ice put on at the end

  6. Types of Ice/Heat Packs • Cervical • Lumbar

  7. Types of Equipment • Pulleys • Bikes • Resistance Bands • Free Weights • Etc. Hard to keep balanced!

  8. Patients • Need to be educated! • Supposed to feel comfortable • Keep them motivated

  9. Observing • New patient evaluations • Diagnostic testing • Treatment planning • Therapeutic techniques

  10. All About Attitude! • Be personable • Break down barriers • Be understanding

  11. Every Patient is Unique • Can never compare • So many different injuries • Everyone has a story

  12. Treatment Execution • Important to demonstrate exercise • Explain proper form • Slowly increase resistance • Light at the end of the tunnel • Long process

  13. Being Professional • Volunteer=being professional • Dress appropriately • Be respectful • Go above and beyond • Market yourself well

  14. Down Time • Never be content with doing nothing • Be proactive…won’t go unnoticed • You’re there to learn • TAKE ADVANTAGE!

  15. Learn • How to clean equipment • Exercise jargon • Exercises themselves • Proper form

  16. Treatment for Patients • Each patient has a file • Each program unique • Modifiable to how patient responds

  17. Taking Initiative • Some PT’s give you more responsibility • Be confident • Stay 2 steps ahead always • Go the extra mile

  18. Logging Hours • Keep track of own time • Important to get signed off by PT • Also stamped by company • validation This is going to look good on my resume!

  19. Networking • Could work with down the road • Job potential?? • Letters of recommendation • Future work contacts

  20. Express Thanks • Company didn’t have to take you in • PT didn’t have to share knowledge • Shows professionalism
