Do now: • Describe your morning routine. What did you do before you come to school? What are some activities we do every day? What are some activities that keep us alive?
Common Characteristics Biotic Abiotic
1. Cellular Structure • Living things are made up of cells.
2. obtain energy • Living things NEED energy = Nutrients
3. Respiration • Living things USE energy = ANY Activities
4. Growth • Living things grow and develop.
5. Reproduction • Living things reproduce - ability to produce offspring.

Do now • 1. State at least two characteristics of living things. • 2. What are characteristics of living representing in these pictures?
Guided Questions • 1. Where are cells? Where can you find them? • 2. Can you think of any types of celles? • 3. What does a cell have? What’s inside of a cell? • 4. What are some functions of cellls? • 5. How does it look like?
Do now • What is the smallest unit life? • Where does a new cell come from?
Cell theory! • 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. • 2. Cells are basic units of all living things (Biotic) • 3. New cells are produced from existing cells.
Types of cells • Single cell organism = Unicellular • Multi-cell organism = Multicellular
Unicellular • An organism that consists of a single cell • They are typically microscopic and cannot be seen with the naked eye. • Perform all the life functions • Many unicellular organisms live in extreme environments • Examples: Amoebas, bacteria, and plankton
multicellular • An organism that is made up of many cells • More complex than unicellular organism • Group of same cells work together to perform specialized functions = tissue • Example: Humans, animals, plants

Do now • 1. A cell phone needs battery in order to function. It produces heats as a waste. • a. Which characteristics of living organisms are similar to those of a cell phone? • b. Why is a cell phone not a living organism?
Review!!!! • 1. What is the smallest unit of life? • 2. How do we, as human being, obtain energy? • 3. what is a scientific term for ‘obtaining energy’? • 4. Why a water bottle is not a living thing?
write the life characteristic referred to in the statement. You MUST use specific terms to describe characteristics of living things. • 1. An earthworm turns away from light. • 2. A dog barks at a stranger. • 3. A person breathes in oxygen. • 4. An orange tree has trillions of plant cells.
5. A basketball player exercises. • 6. A hummingbird drinks nectar from flowers. • 7. A tadpole changes into a frog. • 8. A bacteria divides to make a copy of itself.
