What Is a Retirement Planner? The field of Certified Financial Planner or CFP is a relatively new area of specialization for an investment professional who has years of experience in retirement planning and investment management. This certification program is the first step toward being a certified financial planner who can work in private practice or in agencies of government. Most programs will require an MBA degree with an appropriate amount of practical experience. The majority of CFPs will begin with a two-year Associate's degree in finance or accounting. There is a wide range of careers for those who earn their CFP designation. Some individuals who hold the Accredited Domestic Partner Advisor (ADP) designation have also completed a two-year degree in financial planning and investment management at a college that is accredited by ADPA. In addition to the degree, individuals must demonstrate that they have experience in wealth management from within the corporate structure or from a position that requires financial planning knowledge. The most common CFP jobs are
located in firms that provide advisory services to large corporations as well as government agencies. For example, an individual might serve as a CFP for a company's pension plans, employee benefit plans, or other retirement plans. An individual may also choose to be a CFP for a company's insurance plans or mutual funds, investment management, real estate investments, or asset protection. A few companies have developed their own internal CFP division, which can be found in departments such as human resources, risk management, payroll, compensation, investor relations, banking, and business development. Many businesses and organizations offer the option of becoming certified through a chartered retirement planning organization. This designation is granted based on specific requirements, such as prior professional experience or being a member of a selected group. Individuals who hold this designation are often well-regarded within the industry, have excellent leadership skills, and are dedicated to providing financial planning solutions to their clients.
