LE SUBJONCTIF Using the present subjunctive mood in French
The Subjunctive Mood • You know it in English as a mood, not a tense, used to express things dealing with unreality such as: • Opinions • Emotions • Wishes • Possibility • Actions that have not occurred yet
Regular Subjunctive Verb Endings • Conjugate for 3rd person plural (ils/elles) • Drop the –ent ending • Add the following endings • Je : e • Tu: es • Il/elle/on : e • Nous : ions • Vous : iez • Ils/elles: ent
Irregular Verb Formation • Faire: fass (Il fautqu’onfasssecelademain). • Aller: aill- for singular, all- for plural except 3rd person (Je veuxquetuailles; je veuxquevouzalliez.) • Avoir: ai- (Je doutequ’ill’ait.) • Pouvoir: puiss- (Il croitqu’ilpuisse faire cela.) • Savoir: sach- (Il croitqu’elles le sachent.) • Vouloir: veuill- for singular, vouill- for plural except 3rd person (Ilsveulentquetu le veuilles; ilsveulentque nous le voulions.)
REMEMBER • The word “subjunctive” is formed by combining the words “subjective” and “conjunction.” • Be aware of any subjective indicators such as opinions or desires. • The word “que” is used as a conjunction: a subjective phrase followed by “que” indicates the subjunctive (Je veuxquetu le fasses). • The exception is the use of “chercher” to find something that may not exist, which requires the subjunctive (je cherchequelqu’un qui puisse -----).
