Murrysville Stream Monitoring Group (MSMG): Data contributions to Shale Network database 10/07/2013
MSMG • Location: Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania • Contact: Joe Gutherie, Lori McShea (MSMG) and Julie Vastine (ALLARM) • Number of sites sampled: 10 • Analytes: Specific conductance, TDS, strontium, and barium • Goal: The Murrysville Stream Monitoring Group was formed to monitor the quality of water in local creeks and streams. By establishing a scientifically sound baseline, the group hopes to be in a position to quickly detect changes in the water quality, caused by any number of detrimental activities.
Shale Network locations (black/blue rectangles) plotted with MSMG sample locations (green) as of 10/04/13
MSMG (green squares) plotted with unconventional well sites (blue circles) and wells reported to have PA DEP violations (red diamonds) as of 10/06/13
MSMG data plotted with U.S. Geological Survey (NWIS) surface water data for specific conductance in Pennsylvania (as of 10/4/2013) NWIS; mean= 122.4 uS/cm standard deviation= 114.19 uS/cm MSMG; mean= 485.2uS/cm standard deviation= 149.7 uS/cm
MSMG data plotted with U.S. Geological Survey (NWIS) surface water data for barium in Western Pennsylvania (as of 10/4/2013) NWIS; mean= 46.4 ug/L standard deviation= 19.6 ug/L MSMG; mean= 163.2 ug/L standard deviation= 227.3 ug/L
MSMG data plotted with U.S. Geological Survey (NWIS) surface water data for strontium in Western Pennsylvania (as of 10/4/2013) NWIS; mean= 179.1 ug/L standard deviation=295.4 ug/L MSMG; mean= 239.0 ug/L standard deviation= 116.5 ug/L
Conclusions • Unconventional drilling for natural gas is occurring in Westmoreland County • The MSMG is providing conductivity, TDS, Ba, and Sr data to the public dataset for the northeast in areas of gas development • Conductivity concentrations for the MSMGs’ 10 sites are above the mean for conductivity measured and reported by the U.S. Geological Survey as NWIS data since 1960
