  5. Logical Approach Literature Review • When youths use prescription drugs or alcohol at an early age, it has been found that they are then more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs later in life. This also can affect the likelihood of substance use disorders. The epidemic of youths abusing prescription drugs is increasing at an astonishing rate. There is little research giving attention to this issue however. This present study examined differences in risky behaviors such as drinking and impulsive actions among youths who reported misusing prescription drugs and underage drinking. This study examined 111 youths and 37 reported misusing prescription drugs and alcohol use in the past 30 days. Thirty seven also reported underage alcohol use in the past 30 days but no prescription drug misuse. The 37 others reported no alcohol or drug use in the past 30 days. Not a lot can be learned from this because the numbers are so similar. However, it still shows that youths have issues when it comes to alcohol and drug use.

  6. Logical Approach Literature Review • This was a study of associations between prescription drug misuse and sexual risk behaviors among 2,127 sexually active 14 to 20 year olds. It was found that there was a positive association between cannabis use, prescription drug misuse, opioids, and stimulants and sexual risk behaviors. For example, there were reported sexual acts following the use of alcohol and/or drug use.

  7. Logical Approach Literature Review • The purpose of this study was to see if there was an association of substance abuse and adolescent psychiatric outpatients. A questionnaire was distributed and data was gathered over a 3 month span from 50 adolescents and their health care providers. The self-reports were compared to urine screen results. The result was that substance use was low. There was an exception, however, when it came to self-reported cannabis and alcohol use (for cannabis: 48%, for alcohol: 70%). The urine screening did not provide any extra information, the information was pretty consistent.
