  1. AIRI STATISTICS: TRENDS IN NIH EXTRAMURAL FUNDING Presented at the Association of Independent Research Institutes (AIRI) 50th Annual Meeting October 5, 2011 San Diego California Carol Bleakley Robert F. Moore Robin M. Wagner, PhD, MS Statistical Analysis and Reporting Branch (SARB), Division of Information Services (DIS) Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS) Office of Extramural Research (OER) / Office of the Director (OD) National Institutes of Health (NIH)

  2. Overview • Methods & Data Sources • Definitions • NIH Spending History and Budget • NIH Support to All Grantees and AIRI Members • Competing Applications, Funding and Success Rates • Characteristics of NIH-Supported Investigators • Summary • Additional Resources • Contact Information

  3. Methods and Data Sources • American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 excluded from all analyses • Data sources: President’s Budget and NIH systems • Fiscal years evaluated: 1992 - 2011 • Analyzed grants and contracts for current AIRI members: • Evaluated budget in terms of current dollars and constant dollars adjusted for inflation • Budget figures in current dollars unless otherwise stated • Analyzed and compared data on all NIH applicants and awardees to the subset from AIRI institutions

  4. Definitions • RPG - Research Project Grants • ARRA - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act • BRDPI - Biomedical Research and Development Price Index used to • show effects of inflation • Resubmission – Amendment • First Time Investigator - An NIH competing R01 or DP2 (FY 2008 and • later) awardee without prior major NIH competing grant support • R01 Equivalent - R01, R29 or R37; R29s are no longer made • Success Rate – Probability that a competitive application will be funded • Funding Rate - Probability that an applicant will be funded (competitive • applications only)

  11. Average Amount of NIH Research Project Grants by Type of Organization, Fiscal Year 2010 * ****** ** The overall number of awards to for-profits is small. Thus, the average size of award is skewed due to a small number of very large awards, mostly for core support on multi-site projects. 21. Summary • The NIH budget has been relatively flat after the doubling period, and has decreased when the effects of inflation are considered. • AIRI members continue to account for 6 – 7 percent of NIH funding, and have higher average awards than the overall NIH average. • AIRI accounts for nearly 12 percent of NIH research center awards. • While NCI provides the most award dollars to AIRI members, NHGRI provides the greatest proportion of its budget to AIRI members (30%). • Over the last decade, AIRI members continued to have higher RPG success rates than the NIH totals. AIRI members also consistently had higher first-time applicant funding rates than those from other institutions.

  22. Summary (continued) • The first time investigator policy successfully increased the number of funded first timer investigators from AIRI and other NIH-funded institutions. • The proportion of women first time investigators has risen slightly over the last decade. In FY 2010, women accounted for more than one third of first time investigators for AIRI, slightly higher than total.
