1 • Review the question. 2 • Reread the answer to make sure it fully answers the question.
1 • Review the question. What made the colonists finally decide to write the Declaration of Independence?
Reread the answer to make sure it fully answers the question. 2 The colonists finally decided to write the Declaration of Independence because they wanted to break away from Britain. The colonists were upset about British laws for years. They said the British gave them “taxation without representation.” This meant that the British government taxed goods but didn’t allow any say. In 1775, the colonies petitioned the king, but he ignored their complaints. I can understand why the colonists wanted to split from Britain at this point. I would be really fed up if I were taxed, had no say, and was ignored.

Revise the answer to this question (found on the next slide)using the strategies you learned in this lesson. What did Thomas Jefferson include in the Declaration of Independence?
There are four parts in the Declaration of Independence. The first part was called the Preamble and gave the purpose. The second part told about rights and how the government should uphold them. The third part listed unfair British treatment. The last part said that America was now just like other free countries. Reading this article taught me about the Declaration of Independence.
Revise the topic sentence below so it does a better job of answering the question. Why do we celebrate Independence Day on the fourth of July? We celebrate because the Declaration of Independence was signed then.
Revise these detail sentences. The delegates signed the document on July 4, 1776. The delegates represented thirteen states. The thirteen states broke away from Britain. The thirteen states became a new country.
Revise the conclusion below so it does a better job of wrapping up the question. Why do we celebrate Independence Day on the fourth of July? To wrap up, we get to see fireworks on this day.
Revise the answer to this question. (found on next slide) Why was it important for the Continental Congress to write and share the Declaration of Independence?
They wrote the Declaration of Independence to announce that America was a free country. They wanted to be free of British rule. They wanted to share the document with Americans to make them fight Britain. If they shared it with other countries, the world could see we’re free. Writing and sharing the Declaration of Independence was a smart idea.
