HISTORICAL CONTEXT • The Second World War began in 1939. • By 1941 two opposing alliances had formed: the Allies and the Axis
ALLIED POWERS The Allies were : The USSR Great Britain The United States China and several other countries.
AXIS POWERS The Axis was made up of: Germany Japan Italy and other countries.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT • The Second World War was different from the First World War in a number of ways: • It was more about war between ideologies (systems of ideas) rather than about land (Although it was still a bit about land!) • There were large-scale inhuman acts such as: • Nazi concentration camps • Japan torturing prisons of war (PoWs) • Firebombing of cities • This made the issues even more emotional

6 August 1945At 08:16am the USA drops a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima (it is code-named “Little Boy”)
9 August 1945At 11:01am the USA drops a nuclear bomb on Nagasaki (it is code-named “Fat Man”)
YOUR TASK • Visit each table in the room. On each table you will find sources, paper and pens. • At each table, look at the sources and the question. 3. Write your thoughts on the sheet of paper on the table, and when time is up move onto the next table. Leave the sheet of paper where it is. 4. Once everyone has been to each table, go back to your original seat. Look at what other groups have written on the paper. Feedback to the class.
7 December 1941: Japanese air forces attack the United States naval base at Pearl Harbour, USA.
8 May 1945: The Allies accept the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany. This is known as VE Day. In Europe at least, the Second World War is over.
16 July 1945: The United States test the first ever atomic bomb. It had been developed in secret, deep in the desert. The test was code-named ‘Trinity’, and was declared a success.
6 August 1945: At 08:16 am a nuclear bomb is dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. It is code-named ‘Little Boy’.
9 August 1945: At 11:02am a nuclear bomb is dropped on Nagasaki. The second bomb is code named ‘Fat Man’.
2 September 1945: Japan formally surrenders. The official surrender is signed on the deck of the USS Missouri, in Tokyo Bay. This is the end of the Second World War.
Shortly after the bombing: Radiation sickness makes people very unwell. Symptoms include bleeding from the mouth, hair loss, vomiting and fever. There is no effective treatment, and you can die within days.
Years after the bombing: Survivors develop illnesses many years later. Children especially develop leukaemia, a cancer of the blood or bone marrow. For decades, even more survivors develop cancers of the breast, lung and salivary gland.
