Practicing P.A.W.S. • Each table will be assigned a P, A, W, or S in/on either the playground, cafeteria, bus, or hallway • As a table, you will have 8 minutes to come up with a 30 second to 1 minute skit showing an examples of your assigned letter in an area around the school. • Everyone must participate!

Agenda • - What is an interactive notebook? • -Setting up Interactive Notebook(table of contents, numbering pages, glossary) • -Effort Contract
What is an interactive notebook? • It is a special way of setting up and using a spiral notebook to categorize, remember and creatively interact with the knowledge that you are gaining. It is proven that use of a interactive notebook leads to longer retention of material.
Right Side (Even page numbers) • All the information that you are supposed to learn. • Lectures, notes, text or sources, vocabulary words, video and film notes, teacher questions, essential questions, readings, questions, answers or sample problems.
Left Side (Odd page numbers) • -demonstrates your understanding of the information from the right side (odd page numbers). You work with the right side and interact with the information in creative, unique ways. The left side incorporates and reflects how you learn the material as well as what you learned from the material. Pictures, graphs, homework, bell work, thinking maps.
Interactive Notebook Cover Pages! • 1 for each subject: Social Studies, Science, Math—3 total • Must include: • Your first and last name • The word “Interactive Notebook” • The Subject –Science, math, social studies • 2013-2014 • 8th Grade • Make it your own! Take your time—you will be seeing these all year!
Think-Pair-Share • I am going to ask everyone a question • Once the question is asked, you will each have think time to write down ideas on page 7 of your INB • You then, as a table, discuss your ideas and thoughts about the question • I will then popsicle stick for students to share what they discussed at their tables
Question 1: (Astronomy) • It is estimated that Earth was formed over 4 billion years ago. What will be different in another 4 billion years?
Question 2: (Color) • If everything had to be one color, what color would you choose? Why?
Question 3: (Electricity) • What would happen if a storm knocked out the electricity in your town, and it couldn’t be restored for a month? Sequence the events that might occur.
Questions 4: Viruses & Diseases • if you could create a drug to cure any one disease in the world, which disease would you choose? Why?
Question 5: (Inventions) • In your opinion, which invention has caused the most damage to society? Why?
Essential Question: • What are some things I need to know in order to succeed in Science class?

Passes: • You need to ask Ms. Larson for permission to use a pass to visit the office, go to the bathroom, or get a drink. • You also must ask if you need to borrow a pencil/scissors/colored pencils or markers/paper, etc.
Absent/Late Work • You will have 2 days for each day you were absent to make up the work assigned while you were gone. • Any work that was due the day you were absent is due when you RETURN TO CLASS. • There is a calendar at the front of the room that will include what we did and the assignment that goes along with it.
What happens if I leave an assignment at home, or just don’t do it at all? • You will earn a ZERO on that assignment
Grading Scale • A= 90-100 • B= 80-89 • C= 70-79 • D= 60-69 • F = Below 59
How are grades calculated? • Everything is based on POINTS • Quizzes=40% • Projects=15% • Labs/Demonstrations=15% • Homework=10% • Assignments (bellwork/INB/participation)=20%
Requirements/Effort Contract • Respond to the following prompts in complete sentences: • Now that you have heard the benefits of using an interactive notebook, how do you think it will help you “retain information”? Use specific examples. (5-7 sentences) • Write a promise to yourself and Me, Ms. Larson, that you will try your best and fulfill the requirements and expectations of our classroom and our interactive notebook (Effort/behavior). 5-7 sentences • Write your name below your prompt in cursive and then print your name below. • Write today’s date next to your signature.

Bell Work: • On Page 12 of your INB, write this definition and example: • Inference—Using observations, prior knowledge and experiences, and details from text to make connections and come up with ideas. • Example: Just because the famous actor was seen in a jewelry store, all the tabloids inferred he's going to ask his singer girlfriend to marry him.
