The Sentence • The sentence is the basic unit of all writing • A sentence is a group of words that: • Expresses a complete thought • Contains a subject • Contains a verb
Subjects • For a sentence to be complete, it must contain a WHO or WHAT - a SUBJECT • The subject tells you WHO or WHAT does something or exists in a certain way • The dog chased the car.
Subjects • A subject can be a noun • A subject can be a subjective pronoun
Simple vs. Complete • Simple: the noun or pronoun alone • Complete: the noun or pronoun plus the words that describe it • The four dogs ran after the car. • Simple subject: dog • Complete subject: four dogs
Singular and Plural Subjects • Singular: there is ONE subject • The man jogged. • Plural: there is MORE THAN ONE subject • The man and his friend jogged.
Subjective Pronouns • Pronoun: a word that stands in for a noun • Subjective pronoun: a pronoun that stands in for a subject • John ran the race • He ran the race
