12. In general All of the towns and surrounding areas around Western Southland have pockets of people with high needs – it is not specific to a particular town
The elderly have specific needs – these focus around ageing in place
Families with young children (0-12) have specific needs – these focus around strengthening the resources available to families

19. Primary recommendations Increase the resources available to the local community workers
Administrative support
More discretionary funds to assist families in need
Locate up to two additional social workers in the rural area (Otautau & Te Anau)
Provide additional support to what’s available at the local community level
Plan & manage client case work
Supplement and extend existing health based assessments
Help to co-ordinate local & regional resources in respect of client case work
