SPACECRAFT • Soyuz is a manned space vehicle that brings crew and equipment to and from space stations. • At least one Soyuz spacecraft stays docked to the ISS as a “lifeboat”. Image from NASA Soyuz Back to Table of Contents
MODULES • The Orbital Module houses the crew during ascent and docks with the space station. • The Descent Module houses the crew during re-entry. • The Instrument-Service Module contains solar arrays, communication devices, propulsion systems, and thermal control systems. RE-ENTRY • Before re-entry, the Orbital and Instrument-Service Modules are jettisoned to reduce the spacecraft’s weight. • 15 minutes before landing, three parachutes are deployed. • One second before touchdown, engines on the bottom of the Descent Module fire, slowing down the spacecraft for a softer landing. • Soyuz’s target landing zone is a 25 mile area in Kazakhstan. • While ascent takes about two days, landing only takes about 3.5 hours. CREW • Soyuz holds 2-3 crewmembers. • The vehicle commander is in charge of the crew and the mission. • The flight engineer operates the spacecraft systems. • The optional cosmonaut-researcher communicates with ground control and can take pictures/videos. HISTORY • Soyuz’s first unmanned flight was in 1966. Its first manned flight was in 1967. • Soyuz has been redesigned seven times. • As of May 2008, there have been 99 Soyuz missions. There have been more Soyuz manned missions than any other spacecraft. Soyuz-TMA: the most recent Soyuz design Back to Table of Contents
