  2. Poetry Terminology Rhythm - the natural beat or movement you feel as you read a poem. Rhyme - a repetition of sounds at the end of lines of verses. Stanza - a group of lines into which a poem may be divided. Refrain - a phrase, line or group of lines repeated at various times in a poem.

  3. CINQUAIN Cinquain poems are five lines in length with certain unrhymed specifications. Line 1: title 1 word Line 2: description of title 2 words Line 3: action of the title 3 words Line 4: feeling about title 4 words Line 5: synonym of title 1 word

  7. LIMERICKS The limerick poem takes it’s name from Limerick, Ireland. The limerick is a humorous, nonsense verse of 5 lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme Lines 3 and 4 rhyme

  8. LIMERICK EXAMPLES A patient of old Dr. Black Had an awful pain in his back The doc cured his ill With a huge purple pill And a ride around the park piggyback! A terrible gardener named Dean Grew carrots that ended up green His tomatoes turned blue The string beans too. And his corn smelled like sardines!

  9. LIMERICK POEMS A vicious pirate named Jack Snuck up on his enemies from the back But Jack didn’t care He just sat in his chair And ordered his mates to attack! Every kid deserves brownies All kids, in all counties Every kid is born good Even if they’re from the hood Kids who don’t have brownies, have frownies Mike Visconti

Class Examples of Limerick Poems The sidewalk had a big crack I fell and broke my back I whimpered in pain Tried to crawl in vain My bruises were blue and black Block 1 The bridge was big and tall There wasn’t a chance it would fall It was so heavy Holds 10 Chevys For certain, it isn’t small. Block 1 I saw all of the teachers They were all standing on bleachers They begged to complain About the big game They sounded like wild creatures. Block 2

  11. ACROSTICS An acrostic poem differs from other poetry in that the first letter of each lines spells a word which can be read vertically. The rhyme pattern, number of words, and lines vary in acrostic poems. ALPHABET and NAME POETRY are other styles of acrostic poems.

  12. EXAMPLE ACROSTICS Ball dribbling down A court going Straight for the basket. Leaping in the air like a Kite flying in the sky. The basketball player Ending up on the floor To see the Ball go into the basket. Hands up in the Air having team mates Laughing and Loving it!

  13. EXAMPLE ACROSTICS Making our day special and bright Offering kind words to heal our wounds Teaching us to have good manners Helping us with our problems Easing our pain by Reaching out her hand Simply because she loves you.

  15. Outline and Concrete Poems Outline and concrete poems are designed to give the poet more freedom in the way poems are constructed. Such poems express the meaning or feeling of the poem by illustrating the shape of the poet’s idea.

  16. The Moon Moon The blue moon shines down from heaven, above the clouds, near the stars, on the people below in their box houses, asleep on their tiny little beds, under the warm and comfy covers.

Light Bulb With a light bulb you can see things like the boogieman who hides in the dark or monsters under your bed at night time or the ugly pair of jeans and dirty socks in your walk-in closet. Light bulbs appear over little cartoon characters’ heads when they have an idea sopeople knowit. A lightbulb is usedin so many ways. Turn one on!

  19. Haiku Haiku is a form of poetry that is charming, unrhymed and unique. Haiku topics are generally about nature. It is composed of 3 lines totaling 17 syllables. Line one: 5 syllables Line two: 7 syllables Line three: 5 syllables
