Introduction: • The administration at Guggenheim-Bilbao knows that we just completed a lesson regarding the Spanish Civil War. They have requested our help:
Task: • Wanted: Art Historians • Knowledge of Spanish Civil War Required • Wing of Museum needs artwork relating to the Spanish Civil War. • Please supply us with 3 suggested pieces and suggested audio/video. • BONUS: YOU may choose an unknown artist whose work will be shown in our museum.
Process: • We will use the information we learned in our review of the Spanish Civil War to assist the Guggenheim-Bilbao in their search for additional art pieces. We will use the following plan to achieve our goals.

You have now completed your review of Pablo Picasso’s painting, Guernica, and know that it is one of the first examples of protest art. We will continue to work on continuing to gather information on the Spanish Civil War. Let’s move on to our next task!
Step 2: We will now divide into teams of Three: Each group will have one of the following: • A location expert. • An architect expert • An artist

The artist will • Provide one piece of artwork to be placed in the museum’s Spanish Civil War wing. Please provide an original piece, choices include a painting, photography, or sculpture. • Please provide a report discussing how the Spanish Civil War influenced this piece.
Step 3: As a Group: • Please decide on three pieces to be added to the Guggenheim-Bilbao Spanish Civil War Art wing. You may suggest paintings that are with other museums, war propaganda posters, or other sources. Please provide a short review of each piece and why you consider it an important addition to the museum’s collection.

Teacher Resources: • If you do not have access to Preston’s book, The Spanish Civil War, I suggest using the following sites: http://www.wcml.org.uk/spainarch.html , or http://www.ellonacademy.org.uk/history/higher,%20int,%20cys%20pages/App…/spanish.html • Suggestion: contact a local Art Historian to speak to your class once the project is complete to relate the project to career possibilities.
Teacher Resources, cont’d. • Target audience is High School World History, AP World History, and/or Art History students. • Process: Please evaluate the amount of time you have to spend on this project and allow sufficient class time. However, I would suggest that the individual work be completed prior to the group setting so that each member has background information sufficient to allow active group participation.
Teacher Resources, cont’d. • Technology needed: access to the internet, word processing, possible digital camera, art supplies, any books covering the subject from your school library, community members who might come in and discuss living in Spain during Franco’s time.
Conclusion: • I hope you have enjoyed learning about art, architecture, and history. • One final question: Why do you think that a wall specifically designed to hold Picasso’s Guernica remains blank, and the painting is likely to never be moved here?
