DESIGN BRIEF PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 1910 Bungalow home has been beautifully restored and further additions have been made to incorporate a modern open plan living situation. Set amongst a beautifully manicured garden in the leafy suburb of Nailsworth in Adelaide South Australia, the bathroom was the last of the original rooms that required renovation. Both the clients work tirelessly in the medical industry and have 2 teenage children currently living in the home. The bathroom is only used by Tania & Chris as the children each have their own facilities and hence it is to be designed with a little luxury which is well deserved. STRUCTURAL CHALLENGES: • Out-dated box window • Brickwork below window had soft, crumbling mortar & brickwork • Lacks storage space and had poor functionality • Consideration that any works to the Southern wall may cause damage to glass splashback in the kitchen on the other side of the wall • Soft lime internal plaster to all bathroom walls • Electrical hazards requiring rectification • Confined space (4.08m2) CLIENT REQUIREMENTS: This particular client had some very specific requests. Some were as followed: • Must include a bath that was not smaller than 1700mm length as Chris is very tall • Have ample storage • Removal/alteration of existing window • Tania wanted a view to the garden outside. Chris preferred privacy • Minimalistic design • Client had a previously selected the floor tile
DESIGN STATEMENT AND SOLUTION Being an incredibly confined space which currently did not include a bath tub, meant meeting the requirements of the client seemed almost impossible but with some clever solutions and compromise the final design produced an admirable result. Whilst physically a smaller room was created by building a false wall, a sense of space was created by recessing and concealing as much as possible. A flush recessed mirrored wall cabinet, to almost the full length of this wall, added to the perception of space and the lineal style of the wall niches helped to create the floating effect. Also worth noting is the ample storage space that the cabinet and niches create thus killing two birds with one stone. The window was made considerably smaller to better accommodate the combined bath/shower and to overcome the privacy issue for Chris a switchable glass window was installed allowing the clients the convenience of choosing a clear or obscure glaze at a push of a button. It also played to Chris’ fascination with all things technical. Speaking of which, in screed floor heating was also included to add to the luxury of this little piece of heaven and gave him something else to analyse and conquer. The floor tile which Tania had previously selected was a stunning representation of what this bathroom was to become and was used as a feature tile to the rear of the niches. The cool white tones of the tiles created the light and spacious feel that was so desperately needed and further ambience was created by installing LED under cabinet feature lighting. Polytec’s ‘Shanon Oak’ on the wall hung vanity, featuring the beautiful Villeroy & Boch La Belle counter top basin added warmth to an otherwise stark palette which has effectively met all client requirements and is now the envy of family and friends.
