  2. Delicious, healthy and filling meals are key to diabetic eating. Maintaining the right balance of carbs and fats and proteins can lead to a longer life. Diabetics should have about half a plate of vegetables, 1/4 of a plate of lean meat and 1/4 a plate of carbs. A small side of a dairy product can finish off a balanced meal.

  3. Glazed Green Beans • Forget fattening, carb-laden mushroom soup and onion rings. For this delicious meal worthy of a five-star restaurant, all you need is: • 1 1/4 pounds green beans, trimmed • 1 tbs butter (divided) • 1/4 cup fat-free low-sodium chicken broth • 6 oz red pearl onions, halved and peeled • 3 tbs balsamic vinegar • 1 tbs sugar • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp ground pepper

  4. Boil the beans in water for three minutes, then drain and set them aside. •   Heat 1-1/2tsp butter in a nonstick pan and saute the onions for until browned, then add the broth, vinegar, and sugar, and bring to a boil. Let it simmer until it's thick, about three minutes. • Add the beans, salt, pepper, and remaining butter and toss to coat.
