What conditions are needed for hurricanes to form? • Ocean temperature of at least 27 degrees • Temperature must be maintained down to a depth of 50m • A thick layer of warm, humid air extending from the ocean surface up to the mid troposphere • Release of vast amounts of latent heat by condensation once convection has begun • Needs to be not less than 200km from the equator for the Coriollis Force to allow the system to spin
