  1. W. W. Jacobs Belle II @ Indiana University US Belle II Science Readiness Briefing Jan 10-11, 2019

  2. Group Introduction (past interests) • Physics: precision measurements in strongly interacting systems (using polarized D.O.F.) • STAR(~ 20 yrs): nucleon spin structure / cold QCD studies with longitudinally & transversely polarized pp collisions at RHIC. • Belle (~ 6 yrs): precise light hadron xsections& correlations to extract spin-averaged & polarized fragmentation functions(w/ FF group) • Technology interests: exploit new capabilities / technology • analog and digital detector readout, triggering, HV & LV systems • Belle II KLM readout electronics and iTOP component systems • Achievements (direct / indirect relevance): • STAR di-jet analyses (IU students) putting addt’l / most stringent constraints on gluonic contributions to the spin of the proton. • Belle interference FF + STAR polarized di-hadron correlation measurements enables proton transversity extraction (w/ others) • designed/built/maintain (10kchn, 30 ton) STAR Endcap EM Calorimeter. US Belle II Science Readiness Briefing – Indiana University

  3. Group Introduction (current and future interests) • Physics in progress / projected • expand Belle II interests  synergetic w/ local IU nuclear physics group • dark sector studies; symmetry violations (w/ tau decays) • Bellehadronization/FF studies; transition to Belle II w/ improved statistics, PID, charm tagging and systematics (in collaboration with Duke/Vossen) • continue STAR cold QCD nucleon spin structure studies; possible forward upgrade/return to polarized pp running at STAR in 2021+? • Technology interests in progress • Belle II KLM commissioning & performance (see later slides). • Forward upgrade at STAR; FEE for ECAL/HCAL w/ SiPM readout. • Other support: NSF umbrella grant for the IU nuclear physics experimental group – wwj a non-salaried co-PI (currently, and proposal pending for 7/1/19 – 6/30/22) US Belle II Science Readiness Briefing – Indiana University

  4. Faculty Summary • Will Jacobs, 45% Belle II, 55% Other Stuff (projections) • Belle II: • 25% KLM; FW devel. oversight, commissioning/Belle II performance • 15% begin ramp up on physics analysis • 5% meetings, oversight, shifts, etc. • Other Stuff: • 12.5% Belle; FF group and related, analysis and paper refereeing, etc. • 25% STAR: local group, PWG analysis efforts, upgrades • 12.5% EMCs at STAR: susbsytem oversight and Endcap guru/czar • 5% meetings, reports, shifts, etc. Postdoc / Student Summary • none at present Note: former IU postdoc Yinghui Guan (supported by Belle II ops 2015-18) had a large impact on KLM commissioning, analysis and ops; she also performed a Belle analysis on Lambda transverse polarization (PRL accepted). Yinghui is now at Univ. Cincinnati. US Belle II Science Readiness Briefing – Indiana University

  5. Engineers • Brandon Kunkler(KLM subsystem) • design and fabrication of original RPC FEE and Data Concentrator (DatCon) electronics boards. • original FW and development for RPC / DatCon. • Ongoing commissioning and FW performance upgrades • Gerard Visser(iTOP subsystem) • Design and fabrication of HV divider and front-end boards for the micro-channel plate PMT’s. • engineer heat loading mitigation for front end FEE and board stack assemblies. • misc. component design and specification, etc. Brandon Kunkler Gerard Vissser • Subcontracts: • PNNL (Belle II operations) 1/2/2017 – 12/31/2018 • BNL (Belle II operations) 1/2/2019 – 9/30/21 US Belle II Science Readiness Briefing – Indiana University

  6. Belle II Activities (hardware) • KLM (RPC + Data Concentrator) • Continue to increase DAQ trigger rate and data loading capabilities with simulation and IU Pocketdaq tests. • Various tasks: replicate RPC FW event builder to increase data bandwidth; align RPC and scintillator trigger hits; implement data collector register checks; contribute to troubleshooting and further updates driven by Phase III commissioning and production running, etc. • iTOP (Front-End boards, calibration Pulsers) • Fabrication of ~ 70 more front-end boards for replacing conventional MCP-PMTs on 7 bars by life extended ALD PCP-PMTs by summer 2020(in coordination with Nagoya group). • Fabricate custom pulsers for iTOPfor use in alignment calibrations (replaces fancy on-loan/disappearing pulser system presently in use) Front end board and voltage divider in bench test jig at IU. US Belle II Science Readiness Briefing – Indiana University

  7. Belle II Activities (cont.) • Achievements (recent) • stable operation of RPC/DataConcentrator FW beyond 30 kHz benchmark; now default at KEK for full detector testing (includes transition to revo9 timing, etc.) • Prototype iTOPpulsertested on detector at KEK; final specifications now in hand for fab./delivery in February. • Produce spare DatCon boards (to be tested/delivered during Phase III commissioning). Note: these to replace original spares misplaced at KEK. • Directions and transitions • hardware: more of the same • physics: dark sector and low multiplicity physics Pocketdaq at IU working groups (leverage relevant detector efforts) • Collaboration (tech) w/ other US Belle II groups: discussions with Univ. of Louisville group: adaptor between KLM config. DB & Data Concentrator registers, monitoring, possible future KLM FW tasks. US Belle II Science Readiness Briefing – Indiana University

  9. Conclusion • Our technical contributions are … • support of commissioning & performance upgrades to KLM with strong engineering contributions to KLM and iTOP developments. • Our physics interests are: • continue w/ hadronization (FF) studies at Belle / transition to Belle II. (collaboration w/ US Belle lI group @ Duke Univ. / Anselm Vossen) • follow (new) interest in dark sector (focus on early results) and symmetry violation physics. • In 2017-2018 we achieved: • operational FW for KLM RPC &Data Concentrator for phase II running and significant progress on phase III tasks (including fabrication of addt’l Data Concentrators) . • contributions to phase II KLM commissioning, FW debug & detector operations troubleshoot. • several Belle Fragmention group papers published … contributed both intellectually in FF group and as referee chair (in addition to Vossen/Guan).
