What is a grid? Before answering this question.... DCC/FCUP Grid Computing
What is a cluster? • Generally speaking, it is a set of machines interconnected through a local network • NOWs (Network of Workstations) is not considered to be a cluster by some authors • In our context, cluster can be any set of machines connected in a local network with basic network services such as ssh, nfs etc DCC/FCUP Grid Computing
Clusters • User level: • Utilization policies • Resouce managers • User interface (API, GUI…) • Administration level: • Hardware management • Software management DCC/FCUP Grid Computing
What is a grid? • A set of clusters? • More than that: • Virtual organization that allows the clustering of resources that are geographically distant • Resources can be: machines, data, instruments etc DCC/FCUP Grid Computing
Grids • User level: • Utilization policies • Local resource manager • Global resource manager • Monitoring • Authentication • Certification • User interface • Administration level (local and global): • Hardware management • Software management DCC/FCUP Grid Computing
