  2. Unit 5-Chapter 1 Chapter Challenge Mr. J

  3. Scale of Solar System • The best scale to use for expressing distances within our solar system is the AU scale.

  4. Scale of Solar System AU stands for astronomical unit and equals 93,000,000 miles which is the distance between the Earth and Sun. How many kilometers is that?

  5. Size of Planets and other junk. • Jupiter is the largest planet

  6. Size of Planets and other junk. and Mercury, not Pluto, is the smallest planet.

  7. The Solar System was born from a molecular cloud. • Kinda like a “star nursery”

  8. Sun development • Matter within the molecular cloud comes together to form bodies of mass that compact under pressure and gravity.

  9. Sun development • Eventually the mass starts to heat up because of the pressure.

  10. Sun development • When the heat and pressure are enough, a point of critical mass is achieved and a nuclear fusion reaction begins.

  11. Sun development A star is born.

  12. Then comes the planets • Mercury

  19. Saturn

  20. Uranus

  21. Neptune • Neptune and Moons • This video sequence compiles data from Hubble's observations of Neptune to show the blue-green planet rotating on its tilted axis. A day on Neptune is 16 hours long, and Hubble took images of the planet every four hours. Some of Neptune's moons are also shown. (No audio.) Video Credit: NASA, ESA, and G. Bacon (STScI) Science Credit: The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA) and A. Simon-Miller (NASA Goddard) • NASA: Neptune and moons

  22. Colliding Galaxies Create Active Galactic Nuclei • This simulation follows the collision of two spiral galaxies that harbor giant black holes. The collision merges the black holes and stirs up gas in both galaxies. The merged black hole gorges on the feast and lights up, forming an active galactic nucleus called a quasar and creating a "wind" that blows away much of the galaxy's gas.
