  1. Must-have Tests During Pregnancy Congratulations, you are pregnant! And now it’s your time to be poked, monitored, observed and measured for about 40 weeks. The number of medical tests that a pregnant woman has to take between conception and delivery can be overwhelming but there are two lives at stake during this time and it’s very important to make sure they both remain healthy throughout. By taking the right tests at the right time you can ensure the best possible care for your health and your baby. Here are the important prenatal tests to take trimester wise for any general pregnant ladies. The tests may vary for any co-morbid condition of the mother, complicated pregnancy, Twin or multiple pregnancy, High risk pregnancy etc.

  2. 1st Trimester 1. Vitals 2. Weight 3. Height 4. BMI 5. Blood glucose 6. Blood grouping 7. TLC 8. DLC 9. Anaemia screening 10. HIV 11. Hepatitis B & C 12. Complete blood count 13. Urine routine and culture 14. TB 15. Rubella 2nd Trimester 1. Alpha- fetoprotein test (blood) 2. Beta-hCG 3. Unconjugated Estradiol 4. Quad screening for congenital anomalies- 14-20 weeks 5. Blood glucose screening for gestational diabetes 6. BP screening for hypertensive mothers

Urine culture microscopic for Urinary tract infection Though these are important tests, there may be other prenatal tests that your obstetrician might recommend depending on your background and family medical history. Ultrasound screening is another important prenatal test that helps determine your due date more accurately. These tests are performed between 8-18 weeks of the pregnancy as per your doctor’s prescription. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions. Learning about the test and why your doctor is recommending it for you and what the results of the test could mean, can help you cope with any fears or worries you might have. During pregnancy, visiting the doctor each time you have to take a test can be tiring. While you may have to mandatorily visit the hospital for some tests, there are some tests that can be done at home without having you to visit the hospital.
