Language Arts, Grade 9 Ninth Grade Language Arts is an integrated language arts course for ninth grade students. Course Objectives: This course is designed to implement those objectives stated in Gwinnett County Schools Academic, Knowledge, and Skills (AKS) for Ninth Grade Language Arts. Anchor texts: Odyssey of Homer To Kill a Mockingbird Romeo and Juliet Anthem
Grading Categories. . . Classroom Assessments 35% Quizzes Daily work Homework Informal Writing Summative Assessments 43% Formal Writing Tests and Projects Performance Final Quests (quiz/test) SGP 2% Final/EOCT 20%
High EXPECTATIONS: Are you practicing good study habits? Complete writing is complete thinking. Train yourself to think through answers completely. Practice proper writing skills throughout the semester (in ALL classes).
HOMEWORK AND CLASS WORK • Before handing in work, ask yourself: • Did I . . . • use capital letters to begin each sentence? • use the proper end punctuation? • answer in complete sentences? • use the subject’s name? (NO pronouns like - he, she, it, they) • spell the words out completely? (NO Contractions!) • answer all parts of the question? (Consult this list until it becomes second nature.)
HOMEWORK AND CLASS WORK Grading . . . • + If the requirements are ALL met 100 • If the requirements are MOSTLY met 80 • - If the requirements are BARELY met 60 • Not yet If the requirements are not met 0 • NOTE: Without a complete thought, YOU might know the information; but you have not demonstrated mastery!
Student supplies and resources • ALL students should have . . . • A free email account! • A jump drive • One 2” three-ring binder • Notebook dividers (at least 5) • Loose-leaf notebook paper • Blue or black pens • #2 Pencils with erasers • Hand-held pencil sharpener • Box of colored pencils • Two packs of three by five cards • Suggested donation supplies for room • 4 pack of dry erase markers • A ream of printer paper • Tissues • Paper towels • Hand sanitizer
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES?
Classroom Expectations • Be respectful and considerate of the learning environment. • Come prepared for class (see supplies list) • Respect school and personal property • Respect the rights and feelings of your teachers and fellow students (golden rule) The Golden Rule
Passes • Passes will NOT be given during the first or last 10 minutes of class except in case of emergency. • Use Agenda Book as hall pass. • Emergency calls may only be made from the Clinic Phone.
Rewards • Appropriate behavior will be encouraged and supported . . . • Verbal commendations • Helping in class • Leading groups • Positive emails home
Consequences Implemented according to the plan below. • Verbal warning • Individual conference with student • Restricted Lunch • Parent contact • Detention • Administrative referral – ** Any student may be sent to the administrator whenever the problem is severe enough to come under the guidelines of the Gwinnett County Discipline Handbook)
